The Centers for Dental Medicine has partnered with TPED “The Partnership to End Disease” www.TPED.org to provide support for the CDM “Wellness Counseling” program.
“Health is a choice. But, you can’t make that choice if you don’t know how. I started TPED™ to educate people on how to choose health and achieve optimal wellness.”
-- Raymond Francis, RNC, National Chairman and Founder of TPED, Author, “Never Be Sick Again” and "Never Be Fat Again"
The Oral Systemic Connection is complex and raises certain questions. While it is well documented that Periodontal disease is related to systemic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and even cancer, in that these often occur together, the questions are:
- Does periodontal disease cause systemic disease?
- Do certain systemic diseases cause periodontal disease?
- Does a third factor cause both of them?
We find that the answers all three questions are yes, which means that the Oral Systemic Connection should be more aptly called the Oral Systemic Circle. More specifically:
The Modern Lifestyle
- Poor Diet
- Lack of Exercise
- Toxic Exposure
Results in:
- Obesity
- Lowered Immune System
- Systemic Disease
- Stroke
- Diabetes
- Cancer
- Heart Disease
The Periodontal Threats
- Plaque Buildup
- Calculus Buildup
- Anaerobic Bacteria
- Volatile Sulfur Compounds
+
- Lowered Immune System
= Periodontal Disease
- Creates Anaerobic Bacteria
- Creates Inflammation
- Creates Bleeding
- Increases C-Reactive Protein
- Releases Cytokines
- Negatively impacts blood sugar control
Result:
- Increased Heart disease and Stroke
- Increased Diabetes
- Increases Pre Term Birth
- Increases some cancers

To be successful in the long term treatment of Periodontal disease the CDM hygienist must attack on all three fronts, providing:
1. Periodontal Treatment – killing the anaerobic bacteria and removing plaque, calculus, pockets & bleeding.
2. Homecare- Helping the patient to remove the threats every day- plaque, calculus, anaerobic bacteria, volatile sulfur compounds, and providing nutritional support .
3. Wellness counseling to help the patient make the lifestyle choices that will keep them healthy.
Our Typical Patient:
Will be increasingly referred from their MD, Cardiologist, Endocrinologist, or OB/GYN, Naturopath, because of Cardio-vascular disease , diabetes, or pregnancy.
Successful Treatment should:
1. Eliminate periodontal pockets over normal 3mm and bleeding
2. Eliminate Periodontal Pathogens
3. Lower CRP (if it was high)
4. Lower HbA1c (if it was high)
Of course like the rest of the population probably 75% of these patients are overweight, and if so, there will still be abnormal readings for Hs-CRP and HbA1c. If they are a smoker, successful treatment will be difficult and CRP will remain high.
It should be pointed out that recent research shows that obesity is a predictive factor for periodontal disease which demonstrates that the same poor life style habits that contribute to obesity also contribute to the individual's lowered immune system, inflammatory response and ability to resist periodontal disease. Without correcting the disease producing lifestyle, the periodontal treatment will likely not be permanent.
To get these patients numbers within normal limits will require the intervention of our Wellness Counselor.
Most dental practices find themselves in the self esteem business. There is nothing that will raise the self esteem of a person more than losing weight and being attractive again. People see your stomach before they see your smile. With the stomach out of the way these patients who came in for health will be ready for cosmetic dentistry.

It should be noted that fat cells themselves are inflammatory and generate CRP. However in addition to just the weight reduction this protocol will include anti-inflammatory diet and nutritional supplements to target CRP.
Why this works
Depending on whom you are referencing the individual choices that people make are responsible for between 70% and 90% of all systemic health. This process is clearly documented in Ray Francis’ books- “Never be Sick Again and “Never be Fat Again”

Following the advice in the books, in two months, I went from: abnormal- cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, CRP, HbA1c, and weight to normal everything, at age 65! In the same two months, Chris lost 28 pounds and 3 inches around his waist!
To succeed an individual needs four things:
1. The initial motivation of a “coach” – like the CDM hygienist.
2. Read “Never be Fat Again” – This provides additional powerful motivation because it explains why their previous diets have not worked and what changes they can make in their health.
3. Sign up for where you will get answers to all your questions, on-line from a team of health experts, and regular people involved in the process who care.
4. Follow the book with help from the group.
Implementing the program in the office requires:
1. The CDM Wellness Counseling Manual
2. You and the key team members go through the process so that you can walk the walk, talk the talk and motivate others.
3. The hygienist on a normal Prophy visit will review the Wellness Counseling Checklist with the patient to get them motivated to make changes.
4. TPED-org@yahoogroups.com – Your Free Support System
Yahoo Groups is a favorite choice of professional interest groups as well as hobbyists to exchange information. Anyone can join our group and post messages and read messages from other members. If you have a question, someone in the group will usually have experience and answer it.
Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=tped , select

And sign up.
To make sure the questions get answered adequately, this group includes highly motivated health professionals and regular folks involved in the process willing to help other people achieve health.
These people and all the other members of the group will be reviewing the questions your patients post regarding natural health and fitness and answering in their area of expertise.
Members will also receive health research updates including perio systemic research which will keep your practice fresh in their minds. It would take a real effort for you to create a patient email list and forward research periodically- you get this service for free.
We look forward to your practice joining the group. You have nothing to lose except a few extra pounds.
